Appalachian Literacy Initiative Project
Fort Chiswell Chapter is honored to support the Appalachian Literacy Initiative in their mission to improve literacy rates and provide books to children in need throughout our region.
How We Help:
Assist with book preparation by placing bookplates and stickers in donated books
Help sort books by age and reading level during distribution events
Provide volunteer hours to support their programs
Contribute to their book inventory when possible
The Appalachian Literacy Initiative leads this vital work in our community, and we're grateful to play a small part in their efforts to ensure every child has access to books.

Why This Matters:
83% of low-income students in our region do not read at a proficient level by third grade
61% of low-income students have no books in their homes
Students who don't reach reading proficiency by fourth grade are 4x more likely to drop out
We encourage everyone to learn more about this important initiative and the difference they're making in Appalachian communities.
